Issue 071: Can you have both success and significance?

As we leave August behind and head into September, what if we went into the third quarter with a “helping or giving” spirit in mind. What if we thought about how we can help others succeed as we’re on the path to success?

Last week I read this social post that made such an impression on me that I thought it could happen for you, too. With permission to share, Josh Rulnick, founder of Zire Nutrition and an example of Bounce-Up™, offered a different perspective about success. During his childhood, Josh spent six years with strict physical limitations due to a bone disease. Although the doctors warned Josh would never be an athlete, he played college basketball. And this October, he will run a double marathon as a fundraiser for Young Women’s Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation (YWBCAF).

Success, a goal, an achievement comes with a beginning and an end. Hitting YOUR target, whether it’s health or wealth, is great. It feels good when you reach that ultimate goal. Then, what? Do you stop there? What if there was something more? You might be thinking, what’s “more” than reaching a set goal?

What if, as you are reaching your goals, you are bringing others along with you? What if, instead of “you alone” reaching that ultimate goal, there are 5, 10, or 50 other people who are achieving their goals, too. Have you ever thought about the difference between being a successful person and being a significant person? A significant person is someone who is on this earth with the intended purpose of helping others.

Being a former special education teacher was one of the most rewarding times in my life. No, I wasn’t the greatest teacher. Yet, I impacted the children in my classrooms because my students and co-workers still remember me. What’s crazier? I haven’t taught in over 10 years. So, if it wasn’t my teaching abilities, why do they remember me?

It was a passion to see them succeed, to see their smiles when they did something they didn’t think they could, to see them build their confidence in their abilities. Although I moved from working with kids in the classroom to coaching kids on the basketball court, seeing their excitement when they make a shot is that opportunity to be a significant person.

We all can be successful in our lives when we work harder. But think of success a little bit deeper now. Think about it as bringing others along for the ride. Imagine taking a school bus to the top of the mountain where all the dreams, results, and goals wait for you.

As you grow, as you inspire, take others along the way. Guide them. Help others rise above the challenges. So, when you get to the top, it isn’t only you holding the prize. It’s everyone being successful because YOU became more than the success. You became significant!

Let’s roll into September thinking about how many people we can get on the bus to join us on the journey to the top of that mountain.
