Issue 074: Let’s Celebrate American Business Women’s Day 2021

Today, Wednesday, September 22nd, celebrates American Business Women’s Day 2021! My co-host of our soon-to-launch Talk Show opened my eyes to the importance of this national day meant to bring business women together, providing opportunities for them to grow personally and professionally through education, leadership, and networking support. James Kunkle has assembled a four-woman panel for a premiere podcast and I’m honored to be part of it. How we can bring others along the success path with us surfaced often. Listen here.

To celebrate this day with you, whether you’re a businesswoman or you support them, here are three strategies I’ve implemented that could help in the unpredictable business journey.

  1. Join organizations with intention. Before you join an organization, decide what you want from it. What outcome or benefit would make you consider the cost a successful investment? Over the years, I redefined this question a few times. Now, I look for two different types of people. One is a Play-Up Player™. The member who is a few steps further than you in the business or career path. The other one is the Mountain Guide, which is introduced in my Bounce-Up book. The Mountain Guide has already achieved what you want to achieve. This person didn’t read a book about it. This person made it happened and has the experience to show it.

  2. Get involved to grow your skills and network. Consider a board or committee position within the membership. Sure, it’s a time commitment. However, the benefits will be worth it. First, you’re able to develop your leadership skills, as well as create deeper relationships with those serving, too. The other benefit is that you get a behind-the-scenes view of how the organization operates. Lastly, you’ll increase your skills and more than likely step outside your comfort zone, which leads to greater self-development.

  3. Understand your strengths and traits. We always think we know our strengths and personality traits until we don’t. The first assessment I did was called the Personality Compass (North, South, West, and East) and I became certified in this one. I followed this with DiSC (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness) and then BOLT (Bulls, Owls, Lambs, and Tigers). In between, I had taken Meyers-Briggs and StrengthsFinder. Okay, I went overboard because it fascinates me. In all of these assessments, each one identified the same characteristics. What’s even more valuable is you learn how you communicate and how to converse with others. When it comes to the StrengthsFinders test, understanding your five core strengths can help you understand why you are not hitting those goals. When I’m stuck, I think about those five core strengths and pinpoint which strengths I’m not utilizing for the current purpose. Knowing these can help you move the needle.

Bounce-Up Momentum Builders

1.     Is there a membership you need to rethink because it isn’t serving you?

2.     Do you need a recap of your strengths and traits?

3.     Where do you need to up-level your business skills?
