Issue 121: It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year! Or Is it?

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Year-End Review. 😊 I bet you had a different thought when you read that first sentence and probably hummed the holiday tune. Wrapping up your year could have a few thoughts and emotions that zigzag from negative to positive. It happens to most of us.

I had a review conversation with my mentor at the beginning of December. With six weeks of excellent business travel, followed by my fabulous Ireland trip and Thanksgiving, I spent less time than I usually do assessing my accomplishments.

When my Mentor dove into our 2023 discussion, I answered, "There's still a lot on my list I wanted to do."

Mentor: "Mj, you know what I will say." He chuckled.

Me: "Yes, the same comment I make to my clients, and it's a section in my Bounce-Ability Assessment. Let's look at how far you've come."

Mentor: "Let's get the entire scope of your year, starting with health. About how many medical appointments did you have this year?"

Me: Big exhale. "Less than on-site speaking engagements by a smidgen."

Mentor: "That's on top of business commitments and daily life, attending family events, social engagements, and promoting your son's fundraiser. By the way, I love the T-shirts."

Mentor: Pause. "With that said, let's talk about business accomplishments."

I ran through my list. My mentor added a few more. I shared 31 in-person and 16 virtual programs. Whew!

Mentor: "I'm proud of you. First, I'm proud of you for thriving in life and business despite having another left hook wallop you. Add to it, you had a hell of a lot of business accomplishments alone without all the other sh** you managed."

Me: Smile. Okay, big smile. "I'm proud of myself. And I didn't do it alone. I have an amazing community of givers who supported me this past year. It really does take a village."

Looking at how far you've come is entirely different than looking in the rearview mirror. Sometimes, people think these two actions are the same, so they don't give reflection the time or effort necessary. Reflecting on your path to get where you are right now shows your progress. Any progress you've made is a step closer to your goals. Give yourself kudos. More importantly, be proud of what you have accomplished.
