Issue 078: Are you as committed to your “yes” to yourself as you are to the “yes” you say to others?

"It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.”

– Tony Robbins

In late September, I opened a conference with my keynote, Fearless Comebacks: Make Your Bounce Back Your Bounce-Up. Following me was the fantastic Emmy Award Winning TV Host Darieth Chisolm. Anytime I can hear other speakers, I do because I want to support them any way I can. My favorite part of Darieth’s presentation was her point about make your “yes,” your “yes,” and your “no” your “no.” You probably heard someone say something similar before. But, sometimes, when you experience it at the right time, the point makes a more significant impact.

A few days before the conference, I received a voice message that put a little extra bounce in my step. Unexpectedly, I had the opportunity to be part of a leadership team with a national organization. An organization that I had served on the board at the regional level with two years as co-president.

A highly-respected national member recommended me for this newly-created position. Wow! What a fantastic honor. What would I be able to accomplish in this new nationally assigned position?

Then, I took a step back. As my past presidency board position ended in June, I committed to building a new subscription based program to my business model and several specific business goals for 2022.

Before returning the voice message, I called one of my Power Team Members, my Accountability Partner. We walked through the pros and cons of the opportunity first. Then, we walked through my business plans for the fourth quarter and upcoming year. My second call was to my Mountain Guide Team Member, the person who has achieved what I want to accomplish in 2022. Finally, we discussed what benefits the new opportunity offered that aligned with my 2022 business goals. (The reason having the right people on your Power Team makes a difference.)

With the targeted course mapped out with my Power Team’s guidance, I didn’t let the excitement of the opportunity override my commitment. When I passed on the leadership position, I knew it was the right decision. By saying “no” to the opportunity, I said “yes” to my 2022 business goals and more importantly, myself.
