Issue 080: Own it Like Prince

Do you take ownership of your service, product, or company? Do you own your business conversations, message, and professional presence?

Okay, it isn't about literally owning it like you own your laptop, car, or house. It's about owning the words you say and your professional presence the way Prince owned the stage, his music, and performance. There was never any doubt about what fans would get when they heard or watched Prince. Prince owned his unique ability.

Sure, we all have times when doubt could sneak in. We didn't get the sale we thought we would get. A personal or professional issue occurred that caused a distraction. Our internal infrastructure changed. There could be hundreds of reasons why "owning the stage" slipped.

The problem with this—buyers and customers can tell when we're not on our game. Anytime doubt, frustration, or overwhelm sets in, it will impact our non-verbal communication, our body language. Our shoulders roll in. Our chin slowly slips down toward our chest. And without realizing it, we're giving off clues to our buyers that our confidence is off when it comes to our conversation, service, or product.

If you're more of a sports fan, think about your favorite professional player who commands attention on the field, court, or green. You know when this player is in the game because he has the confidence to win. This player believes in his ability to make it happen.

Recently, I attended a music venue featuring The Prince Project, a Prince cover band.

DaVaughn Weber, the vocalist portraying Prince, owned Prince's portrayal from his movements to his commanding presence on stage to singing the iconic songs When Doves Cry and Purple Rain.

Although it was an evening of fun, DaVaughn's "ownership" memorized me, and it made me reflect on my ownership when it comes to my message, programs, and business.

As we head toward the end of the year, it's a good time to reflect on the changes you might want to make now to kick off 2022 strong!
