Issue 007: One Technique to Develop Unshakability

Have you ever wondered why some people seem unshakable in the face of adversity, while others become immobilized? Though it looks like the “unshakable” people are equipped with an extra something, most often, they developed core fundamentals. When a crisis happens, they’re proactive.

During an interview for my book with Jim Tressel, Youngstown State University President and former Ohio State Football coach, he said, “It isn’t if adversity will happen, it’s when it will happen.”

The same way we prepare for destructive weather, we can prepare for minor and major setbacks. Having thrived beyond three crises in 10 years—sounds crazy—core fundamentals were my foundation. (If you missed my story behind Chronicles, click here.) When the odds were against me, fundamentals [and faith] kept me proactive with my health, rebranding my business while leading NSA Pittsburgh as co-president.

One of the Game Changers, Flip It™, I share in my book is a key technique I use. It’s a simple-to-implement method to flip a negative into a positive that I created while driving into an unexpected snowstorm one January night for my son’s basketball game in Bradford, PA. That’s a story for another edition. Flip It™ makes you proactive.

Flip It™ for a Bounce-Up™ Mindset

During setbacks, Verbal Drama, negativity, immobilizes you unless you’re proactive and shift the inner chatter. Create two columns on a sheet of paper. Write Verbal Drama for the left column and Flip It™ for the right column. Under Verbal Drama, write the negative chatter. Consider how can you Flip It™ to a positive message. Write the positive “flip” under the Flip It™ column. Now, say the “Flip It™” message out loud three times.

Clients love this exercise because it relieves stress, converts negativity to positivity, boosts unshakability, and can be fun. Try it.

  • What messages need a dose of Flip It™?

  • How can Flip It™ impact your mindset?

  • Who needs a little Flip It™ in his or her life?

And the Winner Is…
Let’s congratulate Susan Loughnane, CFCP for her winning contribution in the “Spy an Opportunity” challenge. Here’s a condensed version of Susan’s response.

  1. Listen. In a conversation, listen to a pain point that is repeated.

  2. Join groups. Join social media groups with similar interests. Inevitably, someone will ask “do you know someone who…”

  3. Be curious. Curiosity about people's lives is one way to 'spy' opportunities.

Thank you, Susan! You get a copy of Bounce-Up: Outpower Adversity, Boost Resilience, Rebound Higher.

That’s all for this Chronicles edition. Until next time, have a Bounce-Up™ day!
